Barack Hussein Obama is the 44th President of the United States of America and the first ever African American to be elected to hold the office. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii to an American mother of English ancestry, Stanley Ann Dunham, and a Kenyan father, Barack Obama Sr., in 1961. His parents would divorce in 1964 and Obama would move to Indonesia with his mother, her husband and half-sister Maya, in 1967. He would then return to the United States to live with his grandparents in Honolulu in 1971, aged 10.
Barack Obama is a Columbia University and Harvard Law School graduate. He served as the president of the Harvard Law Review and was a community organizer in Chicago before working as a civil rights attorney and teaching constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School. As a politician he served three terms representing the 13th District of in Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004, losing a campaign to be elected to the House of Representatives in 2000. He would be elected to represent Illinois in the United States Senate, in 2004, and began his presidential campaign in 2007. A year later he would beat Hillary Clinton in the Democratic Party primaries and receive the presidential nomination. On January 20th 2009, after defeating Republican candidate John McCain in the general election, Obama would be inaugurated as President of the United States, becoming the first African-American to hold the office.
During his first term Obama is remembered for passing an economic stimulus package worth over $831 billion to counter the economic recession in the country, ordering the end of the U.S. military presence in the Iraq War, sanctioning a special forces operation that resulted in the death of Osama Bin Laden and passing the health care bill 'Obamacare' that resulted in over 20 million Americans gaining health insurance.
In November 2012 he would be re-elected for a second term as President of the United States, beating Republican candidate Mitt Romney. In his second term he called for equality for LGBT Americans, ordered American troops back into Iraq to counter the gains made by the Islamic State and normalized relations with Cuba.
Barack Obama has two daughters, Sasha and Malia, with wife and First Lady Michelle Obama and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009.
