"Dangal" took the highest record for a one-day collection in India on Christmas day 2016 as the record-breaking earnings hit 42.35 crore nett on Sunday. As predicted, the movie starring Aamir Khan bust the box office and so far the first three days of the Christmas weekend have been brilliant. In fact, the collections across the world are going to guarantee this movie will be talked about for a long time to come.

The story based on the real life of Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters has cracked open some serious stereotyping of women in what is often perceived to be the full contact male sport of wrestling.

It was not enough to just know that Phogat's daughters made it at the 2010 Commonwealth medal podium - it was taking the whole sad story of the failed champion (Aamir Khan) and creating a convincing and evocative movie that was the challenge for director Nitesh Tiwari. But the movie delivered and those seats in theaters are convincing proof that we have a winner with this film.

Of course, people still speculate whether "Dangal" will overtake "Sultan" and become the biggest earner of 2016 and we will still have to wait and see. It is not unexpected that across India the movie has done so well this far. Overseas figures are excellent too.

New Zealand collections for 'Dangal'

New Zealand, that little island nation well south of Australia saw 'Dangal' hit the #4 slot on their charts and in two days grossed NZ$ 92,839.

One could understand the popularity of it in a country where there is a large Indian population, which New Zealand does not have. This shows the appeal of the movie across all cultures and also illustrates how highly rated Bollywood is becoming on cinema screen worldwide.

India Today tells us that it was the positive reviews from critics that helped to get the word out about the potential of this movie.

The trailers did a fantastic job too, and millions of people across the world watched them before they dug into their pockets and blew away the online pre-sales books. Ashish Saksena, COO of BookMyShow said, “We were expecting "Dangal" to do very well at the box-office but this kind of traction is unprecedented."
