Mick Jagger is resting and reportedly recovering well in a hospital in New York, following valve surgery to his heart. Billboard reports the Rolling Stones frontman underwent heart valve replacement surgery on Thursday and is now resting up.

The Rolling Stones postponed the North American part of their “No filter” tour after a routine scan showed Mick had a problem with his heart. He underwent a minimally invasive procedure at the Presbyterian Hospital in New York where he is now being monitored by nurses. The procedure saw surgeons repairing the heart valve using a catheter.

This was able to access the major artery with no need to open Jagger’s chest.

Friends close to Jagger said he is recovering well from his surgery after the routine scan revealed the unexpected heart problem. The Rolling Stones announced the postponement of their tour on Sunday in order for Jagger to have the heart procedure.

Jagger himself apologised directly to his fans on Twitter, sending huge apologies to his fans in America and Canada who had tickets. He said he hated letting them down like this and is devastated to postpone the tour. However, Jagger says he will be working hard to get back on the stage as soon as possible.

Jagger follows a strict fitness and diet regime and doctors say while he will require further medical treatment, they expect Jagger to make a full recovery from the surgery and the Stones could well be back on the road by around the beginning of summer.

The band was originally booked to play 17 shows between April and June in the US and Canada.

Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood voice support for Mick Jagger

Jagger’s bandmates, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood, expressed support for Jagger, 75, when he announced he was postponing the tour.

Richards, who has been with Jagger since 1962, tweeted that it was a big disappointment to them all, but “things need to be taken care of” and they said they would see Jagger soon and are always there for him.

In his own tweet, Ronnie Wood said they would miss him over the next few weeks but are looking forward to getting together very soon.

Wood went on to thank everyone for their supportive messages, saying it means a lot to them.

As reported by the Guardian, the group made an official statement about the postponement of the US and Canada tour, apologizing to all fans who have existing tickets as they will be valid for the new dates once they are rescheduled. They hope to announce the new tour dates soon.

The statement went on to say that Mick was advised by doctors not to continue with the tour at this time, but that they expect him to make a full recovery and get back on the stage in the near future.
