South Africa was at 123-2 at the end of the first day's play in the ongoing second Test against Pakistan at Newlands in Cape Town. South Africa bowled out Pakistan for just 177 runs in their first innings before coming out to bat and scoring all those runs. Skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed's knock of 56 was the only score above 50 for Pakistan. For South Africa, first it was Duanne Oliver with his spell of 4-48, and then Aiden Markram who scored a brilliant half-century.

The second day's play will resume with Hashim Amla walking out to bat with Faf du Plessis.

Markram and pacers put Proteas on the driving seat

South African captain Faf du Plessis made a brave call sending in Pakistan to bat after winning the toss. Mohammad Abbas came in for Pakistan replacing Hasan Ali, while Keshav Maharaj was dropped in favour of Vernon Philander.

The Proteas got into action quickly removing both the openers cheaply. Pakistan's no. 3 Shan Masood showed some resistance but kept running out of partners. The four-men pace attack of the hosts had the visitors struggling at 54-5 the lunch break.

Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed stitched a 60-run partnership with Masood helping his side to recover slightly. Masood fell for 40, as Sarfaraz went on to notch up his 17th Test fifty.

Mohammad Amir supported his captain well with an unbeaten knock of 22 runs, but none of the other tail-enders were able to hang around for long.

Pakistan was finally bundled for 177 runs in just 51.1 overs. Duanne Oliver picked up four wickets carrying his excellent form from the previous game, while Dale Steyn picked up three wickets. Philander and Kagiso Rabada got one and two wickets each as well.

The hosts got a solid start with the openers Dean Elgar, and Aiden Markram cutting loses early on.

The 56-run stand between them gave the South Africans an ideal start. Elgar got out to Amir for 20, but Markram continued playing aggressively scoring all around the ground.

Markram went on to get his fifty while Hashim Amla steadied things down from the other end. After scoring 78 runs off just 96 balls, Markram got out to a ball from Masood which had kept low. Stumps were called by the umpires at this point, as South Africa's score was 123-2. The hosts are trailing by just 54 runs with eight wickets in hand.
