One would not typically associate Gary Barlow (Take That, X-Factor, Let It Shine) with the classic science fiction space opera Star Wars but that is about to change. Last year there were rumours reported by The Sun that he had been cast in the movie. The reports were primarily based on information that Barlow had been spotted on numerous occasions at Pinewood Studios in London, the major traditional filming location used for the Star Wars.
Barlow’s agent denied the speculation at the time, but today it was revealed as fact by the man himself on ITV.
He told this morning’s Lorraine programme: “I’m not a Stormtrooper, but I am in it,” and continued to joke, “(but) I think the Star Wars people are so strict about what information (is divulged). So me saying that, I’ve probably just done myself out of a role!”
A Lucasfilms producer has since confirmed that the information is correct and, undoubtedly to Barlow’s relief, that he has not been dumped because of his loose lips on the morning TV sofa.
The Force: Could It Be Magic?
It remains unclear how much screen time the singer will be afforded, what significance his role with have, or whether he will be unrecognisable after make-up and costume. Such was the case with Simon Pegg in his role as Unkar Plutt in Episode VII: The Force Awakens.
Barlow joins a growing list of celebrity cameos which have been confirmed for the film, including princes William and Harry (reported by the Mail on Sunday to be playing Storm Troopers) and Rogue One director Gareth Edwards. Episode VIII will also pay tribute to actor Warwick Davies who famously appeared in The Return of the Jedi by being cast yet again as an ewok.
There is previous form in this department for Star Wars under Disney, as James Bond actor Daniel Craig appeared in The Force Awakens as the Stormtrooper who falls victim to a Jedi mind trick from Rey (Daisy Ridley). With the obvious potential for anonymity when suited up in Stormtrooper gear, it begs the question which other famous names have secretly appeared in the franchise?
