A lawyer who was formerly linked to an aide of US President Donald Trump has been sentenced to 30 days in prison and a $20,000 fine (which is virtually nothing to a guy like him) in Robert Mueller’s FBI probe into the potential, alleged ties between the 2016 Presidential campaign of the would-be POTUS and the Russian government. This is the first official sentencing in Mueller’s highly publicised special investigation.
This guy’s name is Alex van der Zwaan
Alex van der Zwaan is the lawyer who’s been sentenced. He’s the Dutch son-in-law of one of the richest men in Russia and he used to work with one of Trump’s aides. US District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson made the historic sentencing. It’s only a short sentence, sure, but it will probably be the first of many as Mueller continues his crusade to bring the Trump team down and expose every tie between his campaign and the Kremlin.
Paul Manafort, who was the chairman of Trump’s campaign back in the day, is the aide who van der Zwaan used to work with. The lawyer pleaded guilty of the charges against him – which included lying to the FBI’s investigators and withholding emails from them, and even deleting some before they could get to them – on 20 February and he’s only just been sentenced.
