A Polish cow that was being taken for slaughter in southern Poland was having none of it. The animal must have realised that her journey would not end well and made a bid for freedom. The cow smashed through a fence and broke the arm of a farm worker who tried to stop her.
The cow's owner Mr Lukasz tried to make the cow come back to the farm but the cow jumped into nearby lake Nysa. The cow swam to the nearby island and then firefighters were dispatched to bring the cow to heal but this too ended in failure. As the firemen approached the island in a motorboat the cow swam to a nearby peninsula.
The cow has been living free ever since and the farmer has been dropping off food for the cow.
Polish politician intervenes
Pawel Kukiz a Polish politician has said he would like to save the cow and let her live in peace and safety. Mr Kukiz posted his tribute to this brave cow on Facebook. The cow has been heralded as a hero in her native country with some saying if Polish people were like this cow Poland would be a strong country.
This cow had the guts and intelligence to choose its own destiny and deserves the chance to live without harm. This shows the cow recognised or sensed that danger was around the corner which calls into question the fact many regard cows as dim.
Other cases of animals resisting man!
There was a case of bull some time ago that escaped out of the bullring and jumped into the seating area of spectators. This Spanish bull like the Polish cow must have realised its life was in danger and made a bid to escape.
Elephants are known for their great intelligence and have turned on their human masters.
There is open warfare in places like India or Africa between humans encroaching on their space and elephants. It is not surprising that animals like elephants resist humans but when a cow does this there is obviously some level of awareness there. There have been cases of pigs escaping slaughterhouses and other creatures wishing to preserve their lives.
Who can blame them it is the basic instinct of every living sentient being upon this planet to preserve its life.
Many of the escaped animals usually win the respect of humans and usually end up living in places of safety. There are many sanctuaries that take these animal refugees in where they live comfortably.
Sometimes as humans we need to take a step back and recognise these creatures have feelings. They are not just livestock or for the amusement of our species. Cows and other human owned farm animals appear to be self-aware and that is something for us to think seriously about.
