The January transfer window is just around the corner, the best Premier League clubs will have another occasion to strengthen their squads by adding new faces. Here's a look at some of the recent acquisitions, and whether or not they have paid off.
Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal paid the most money to each acquire only one player: Paul Pogba, John Stones, and Shkodran Mustafi, but who are the best performers out of all the summer signings? Let’s take a closer look at the top three candidates for Premier League transfer of the year.
3. Marcos Alonso – Chelsea
When The Blues announced the signing of Spanish full-back Marcos Alonso, many Chelsea’s supporters were furious with the board. They thought that he would be another player that wouldn't settle in London, just like he did in Sunderland and Bolton. But after his short spell in England, he has upgraded his skills in Fiorentina. Right now, at the midway point of the season, Marcos Alonso is proving that Antonio Conte’s decision to bring him to Stamford Bridge was a good one. He is contributing in defence but also in offense, as he has two assists and one goal to his credit.
2. Shkodran Mustafi – Arsenal
It took almost five years for Arsene Wenger to sign a world-class centre-back, but when he finally did, he made sure it was the right one.
It takes some time for a defender to adjust to the tough and fast style of the Premier League, but the German international seems like he has played in this league for ages! Unfortunately for Arsenal his injury came at the worst time. The Gunners have lost three of five games this season without the solid Mustafi. In his twelve starts they remained undefeated.
1. N’Golo Kante – Chelsea
The midfield general was crucial for Leicester City last season, as he helped his former club win the Premier League title, and it seems like he is doing the same for the Blues. He became more of an offensive player, as Chelsea’s style of play is different from Leicester, but he still has decent stats all around.
