“Overwatch” is partnering with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation this month. They are giving 100% of the proceeds from a Pink Mercy skin directly to the charity with players able to get a new skin between May 8th-21st by supporting the charity. “Overwatch” is the hugely popular team shooter developed by “World of Warcraft,” “Starcraft,” and “Diablo” creators, Blizzard.
The game has more than 35 million players worldwide and has won numerous awards. Players choose from one of 27 distinct characters and battle across objective-based map, it is renowned for its character skins and holds numerous events across the year featuring new ones.
The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is the largest private funder of breast cancer research in the world. It supports 275 scientists across 15 countries in six continents at leading medical and academic facilities. Breast cancer is the most common cancer for women worldwide, and it is a disease close to the hearts of the “Overwatch” development team with many of them personally affected.
Pink Mercy
The character Mercy is known as the guardian angel of “Overwatch.” Her real name is Dr Angel Ziegler and she has dedicated her life to healing and helping people. She is a support class character who can quickly navigate the battlefield to restore health to an ally in need and can also buff a character so that it deals additional damage too.
“Overwatch” was originally released in May 2016 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC. It has since become a smash hit with a dedicated player base and esports events. Blizzard has continued to support the game since its release by adding new characters, updates, and fixing bugs and balance issues.
'Overwatch' and its inspirations
The game is inspired by classic PC shooter, “Team Fortress 2” with many of the objectives and characters resembling the classes in Valves legendary shooter. It also incorporates elements from the MOBA genre with each character have unique special powers and ultimate moves that can shape the battlefield and change the tide of a fight.
There are many different modes in “Overwatch” with varying objectives. Players can form teams with their friends and battle their opponents across numerous maps. The variety of characters and maps means that no two matches will be the same. “Overwatch” is a recognised and popular esport that draws a large audience.
