The Switch is the biggest hit Nintendo have had in years. It has sold almost 18 million copies as of March 31st. This information is taken directly from the Nintendo fiscal year report. Amongst all this, Nintendo has a new CEO taking the reigns as well.
Nintendo originally set a 14 million sales target for the Nintendo Switch and have gone on to exceed this estimation. Nintendo had already surpassed this goal as of December 31st with 14.86 million units sold. They have gone on to say that they expect to ship 20 million more units in this fiscal year (before the end of March 2019).
With a new CEO at the helm, Nintendo intends to go from strength to strength. They have seen their largest yearly profits since 2010. The new CEO, Shuntaro Furukawa, replaces Tatsumi Kimishima who oversaw the production and debut of the Nintendo Switch.
Furukawa joined Nintendo back in 1996 and worked in their global marketing department. He also worked on the board that partly owns The Pokemon Company. He takes over Nintendo while it is on a high and will hopefully lead it to future success.
Best-selling games
The Nintendo Switch itself has seen fantastic success with games like "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe," "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" and "Super Mario Odyssey." Each of these scored incredibly highly with critics.
The console came out on 3rd March 2017 and has gone on to become a must-have item with many console selling games to play.
Each of these games has sold well on the console. "Super Mario Odyssey" sold 10.41 million copies. "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe" shipped 9.22 million, and "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" has sold 8.48 million.
These are the top three selling Switch games, but many others have sold well on the hybrid console.
Upcoming releases
Looking to the future, Nintendo has plans for further Wii U games to be released on the Switch. These include the likes of "Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker" and "Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze." There is also a brand new "Mario Tennis" game coming in June as well as the latest entry in the immensely popular "Super Smash Bros."
The Nintendo Switch doesn’t look like it is going to slow down anytime soon in terms of console sales or game releases.
It has already sold more copies in a year than the Wii U sold in its lifetime. The 3DS is still ahead at roughly 78 million copies sold, but the Switch is steadily closing the gap.
Nintendo has also recently released the Nintendo Labo line of accessories. These are cardboard accessories and mini-games. One part building project and one part game experience, they provide a new and interesting way to play with your Nintendo Switch.
