The dinosaur hit movie directed by Steven Spielberg titled 'Jurassic Park' was released more than 20 years ago, in 1993 and became the world's highest grossing movie with its $900 million revenue. (A record later broken by 'Titanic' [1997].)
Building on the success of the first movie, the dinosaur franchise was followed by two sequels which however showed a declining trend: 'The Lost World: Jurassic Park' grossed for $619 million in 1997, while 'Jurassic Park III' ended up with $369 million is 2001.
The idea for the fourth movie was born in 2002, but it was delayed for more than a decade and was eventually brought up again in 2011.
A new, relatively young director Colin Trevorrow was chosen and Steven Spielberg returned as executive producer.
'Jurassic World' is set twenty-two years after the events of Jurassic Park, when Isla Nublar, an island located off Central America's Pacific Coast near Costa Rica features a fully functioning dinosaur theme park, called Jurassic World. All is working nicely at the park, until at the owner's request, the park's geneticists create a hybrid dinosaur known as Indominus rex to boost visitor attendance. The hybrid inevitably escapes and starts a deadly rampage.
Imax will release the Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment Film that stars Chris Pratt starting June 10 on 445 of its international giant screens and will add another 364 cinemas when Jurassic World debuts in the United States on June 12.
In total 'Jurassic World' will be available on 800 screens at the same time breaking the previous Imax record of 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' by over 100 screens.
"Summer box office has been riding high since Universal Pictures' 'Furious 7' launched in April, and now we look forward to that momentum continuing with Jurassic World poised to take the world by storm in record-setting fashion in Imax theaters," said Greg Foster, senior executive vice president of Imax Corp.
and CEO of Imax Entertainment.
The 3D action-adventure film is set to be a major box office hit (especially taking into account Imax ticket sales) and thus plans for a fifth movie have already begun.
