More and more actors and actresses are exploring the power of the social media and crowd-funding to make certain projects, remakes, reboots and sequels happen. The newest members of this trend are Marlon Wayans and Shawn Wayans, who both starred in the 2004 movie White Chicks, with the former putting up a picture on his Instagram to see whether there's any interest for a sequel. Although the original target was 300,000 likes, the picture has already received more than 1.5 million on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram in only a week of time.
White Chicks was a kind of goofy comedy, one that you would expect from the Wayans brothers.
Marlon is mostly famous for his parodies of certain movies and genres, having appeared in the first two chapters of the Scary Movie franchise and in both 'A Haunted House' films, while Shawn has been mostly into writing and producing films.
White Chicks also featured Terry Crews (Brooklyn 99, Expendables) and Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter) and tells the story of two federal agents who always mess up their secret missions. When another mission goes south they are tasked with guarding the spoiled sisters of Brittany and Tiffany Wilson. After the girls suffer minor injuries, the agents go undercover as the Wilson sisters, the move resulting in one of the worst make-ups in Film history.
The movie made fun of the spoiled teenager girls from high class families, while also mocking the work of the federal agency.
Although it was far from a masterpiece, it still delivered good laughs. Now with spy movies coming out every year, and with the age of smart devices, a possible sequel would still work as it could continue scoffing the trends of nowadays.
After receiving the huge positive feedback for his Instagram picture and vastly outperforming the original goals, now it's Marlon Wayans' turn to keep up his end of the bargain.
The actor has reportedly shown the reaction of the fans to the studios, and now everyone's waiting for their response. Recently Ron Perlman has started a similar campaign for Hellboy 3, and 'fannibals', fan of the TV show Hannibal, also started a petition to save their favourite TV series.
