Bollywood is world's biggest movie industry with over 1000 films a year and with over 100 years of cinematic presence in the country, Indian Cinema is now experiencing a big competition in the form of Hollywood magnum opus releases.
The latest example is the mammoth Jurassic World which broke records worldwide and stormed the Indian Box Office alike. Recent Bollywood movies like Piku, Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Dil Dhadakne Do all have done good business thanks to their fresh themes and out of the box scripts.
The Indian audience has evolved to a stage that it no longer accepts outdated and mellow content even if it stars the biggest names of the industry. One glaring example of this fact is the recent Mahesh Bhatt's romantic epic "Hamari Adhuri Kahani".
At a stage where not all Bollywood movies have had success in cracking the content code, Hollywood has always been on the forefront when it comes to quality content and more importantly content which connects across borders. It is new for an industry like Bollywood with the maximum amount of releases in a year to learn that it has a bigger competitor than its past and it is Hollywood.
Hollywood movies like Avengers Age of Ultron and Fast & Furious 7 have done tremendous business in India, especially due to the fandom that exists for Hollywood franchise which is still missing for Bollywood movies. Fast & Furious 7 released opposite Sushant Singh Rajput's much awaited Byomkesh Bakshy and Fast & Furious 7 collected over 110 crores at Bollywood box office while Byomkesh Bakshy failed to register its presence.
The more recent example of the fact that Hollywood is ready to give Bollywood a jolt in its own hometown is Hamari Adhuri Kahani being rejected and Jurassic World being accepted wholeheartedly. And like Hollywood's English presence was not enough, it increases its viewers in the country by releasing the movie dubbed in Indian regional languages, thus increasing the viewer base by many folds.
Thus to stay away from the competition, producers have started planning releases in such a way that they don't clash with a Big Hollywood release. We will have to wait and watch if Hollywood can give competition to the three Khans of Bollywood; Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan and Amir Khan who are Bollywood's biggest superstars and have a god-like status in their fan base.
