'The Green Mile' (1999)

“The Green Mile” is based on King’s 1996 bestselling book of the same name. The moving story tells of a death row inmate with magical healing powers who touches everyone around him in the prison. Tom Hanks plays a prison warden while Michael Clarke Duncan plays the inmate. The film got a nomination for Best Picture in the 2000 Oscars and a Best Supporting Actor award for Duncan.

‘The Shining’ (1980)

While King himself didn’t appreciate Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of his novel, the film is excellent and extremely scary. It tells the story of the Torrance family, the patriarch of which is tasked with caring for the Overlook Hotel during its winter closing. There’s plenty of ghosts and things that go bump in the night. Jack Nicholson’s performance as the axe-wielding madman left a definite impression. “Here’s Johnny!” everyone?

'Gerald's Game' (2017)

This Netflix Original adaptation of King’s 1992 psychological horror novel “Gerald’s Game” is a more recent addition. Many couldn’t imagine how the story could be adapted for the screen, but it worked out well. The story is about Jessie (played by Carla Gugino) who reluctantly gets involved in a bondage sex game in a remote cottage. As noted by Joe, while this is ongoing, her husband Gerald Burlingame (Bruce Greenwood) suffers a fatal heart attack, leaving her handcuffed to the bed.

'Children of the Corn' (1984)

Based on one of King’s early short stories, “Children of the Corn” is a 1980s cult classic horror film. Set in Nebraska, a bunch of kids become involved in a cult led by the evil Isaac and his henchman Malachai. The creepy children kill of all the adults in their town and basically take over. Some years later a couple is driving through the town and soon encounter the children.

'1922' (2017)

Another recent Netflix Original adaptation of King’s work is “1922.” As reported by DGiT, the story comes from the author’s 2010 novella and powerfully stars Thomas Jane as a Nebraska farmer who conspires with his son to murder his wife. Afterwards they both start experiencing horrifying events, including rats, and the eventual return of his wife.
