This year the world beauty contest "Miss World" was held in China. After a lapse of 17 years, Miss Manushi Chhillar won the title competing with 118 contestants from as many countries including conservative Muslim nations like Indonesia, Iraq, and Bangladesh. The win came after Priyanka Chopra of Bollywood and Hollywood fame won the title in London in the year 2000. With this win, India is now bracketed along with Venezuela as the country credited with the most wins in this competition. The news was reported by the DailyMail.

Manushi Chhillar is a 20-year-old medical student from Sonepat in Haryana.

This is the state which has the highest incidence of female infanticide in India and it is a tribute that Manushi was able to win the world beauty contest. Manushi comes from a doctors family as both her parents are doctors. She is a student of a medical college for women in Haryana. Manushi won the contest after she scored heavily in the question-answer session. Asked as to who she considered should be the highest paid profession the world, she confidently replied that her mother deserves this accolade as she was the source of her inspiration.

Manushi was the sixth Indian girl to win the title which was first won by Reita Faria in 1964. She was also a medical student and went on to complete her MBBS and presently lives in the UK.

After a gap of 27 years, Aishwarya Rai won the title in 1994 and became the most accomplished actress in Bollywood. Most of the Miss World winners from India have entered the film industry with Priyanka being the most successful as she has bagged roles in Hollywood as well.

India is happy

Manushi is an accomplished Indian classical dancer and has been modelling from the age of 17.

She won the Miss India World title and the right to compete in this beauty pageant in China. The Indian people and government are delighted and the President and Narendra Modi have congratulated her. This victory is a tribute to the emancipation of women, particularly in the state of Haryana which has the highest imbalance in the sex ratio in India in favour of males.

Manushi will probably try and follow in the footsteps of Priyanka and Aishwarya and try her luck in Bollywood. She has expressed her desire to act in a film opposite Amir Khan, who is her favourite actor as reported by the Hindustan Times. This will be later, as Manushi now basks in the limelight of having won the Miss World title.
