Emre Can has yet to sign a new contract at Liverpool. There are rumors that Can is hoping to get a free move to Juventus. The Italian giants have been keeping tabs on the center midfielder for over a year now and the prospect of landing their target for free at the end of the current campaign might be an opportunity that they cannot refuse.
Man City have been tipped to make a move for the player as well and could scupper any attempts that the Italian Champions might make. Whether Can would prefer to remain in the UK or if the lure of Italian football is hard to turn down, only time will tell.
Current Season
Klopp for his part has looked to deflect any talks of a new contract at the moment. He is preferring to focus on matters on the pitch as Liverpool look to recover their domestic form after struggling in recent games.
Can, for his part, has been a regular starter for Liverpool since he joined from Bayern Leverkusen in 2014. Can has been in good form and has contributed three goals in the current campaign, all of which have come in Europe. Losing such a key player is the last thing that Klopp or Liverpool will want to face.
Liverpool for their part, are light on numbers in the center of the park. Klopp has been criticized in the past for failing to strengthen in key positions, namely at center back.
The loss of another key player, especially on a free, is something that fans and players alike will not want to see without a backfill. Can has made nearly one hundred first team appearances for Liverpool to date. His versatility has seen him line out as a right back, center back, as a holding midfielder and as a center midfielder.
Premier League Players and contract negotiations
Can appears set to become the latest premier league player to refuse to sign a new contract. Alexis Sanchez and Mehmet Ozil from Arsenal are two other high profile players who recently refused to commit their futures to their clubs. Whilst contracts can be signed at any time in the season, there is an increasing trend of players refusing to commit to clubs.
The lure of silverware with larger clubs appears to be the main reason for refusing to sign new contracts. Only time will tell if the players will commit to new contracts before the end of the current season, but as things currently stand, Liverpool and Arsenal look set to lose some of their biggest players on a free. They may end up having to face them again in the colours of their rivals.
