Following the England team's disappointing performance at the Euro's, it has now been confirmed that Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce will be taking over Roy Hodgson's recently vacated spot as the new England manager. The news has been met with mixed reaction.
Newly appointed Manchester United manager.
Newly appointed Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has praised the appointment claiming Allardyce is "more than ready" to manage the England squad and that he is a "good motivator and can create a good team spirit." Former England manager Sven Göran Eriksson, who managed the team between 2001 to 2006, also backed the Englishman.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the head coach at Shanghai SIPG said, "Sam has been there for a long, long time and he's done a good job wherever he's been. He's very organised so that will be a very organised team I suppose. So why not? Good luck, Sam." West Ham fan Calum @calumwhu, is very reluctant to praise his club's former manager but concedes that he's the "right choice because he obviously gets the best out of his players."
"My concerns about his appointment," says Calum, "are obviously his lack of success, but like I said this is offset by the fact that he's never had the opportunity to work with a top quality team.
I'm also worried that his style of play won't translate to an England team that are used to having 65 percent possession every game, but if teams he's managed previously can score 2 goals with 35 percent possession, why can't this England team do just as well with 65 percent?"
However, this reaction hasn't been shared by all.
Aged 61, Allardyce is a managerial veteran with a strong number of teams under his belt. He started out managing Blackpool back in 1994. He since went on to manage Notts County, Bolton, Newcastle, Blackburn and West Ham before moving on to manage the struggling Sunderland. Yet, despite this time in top-flight Football, he has never managed a team who are expected to win each and every game.
Whilst Göran Eriksson praised Allardyce saying, "Many times he has managed a team that has been struggling and has done the job" many fans don't think this qualifies him for the role, Hartlepool fan, Connor Harper, says, "His entire managerial career history has been damage limitation and avoiding relegation. This is a foreign challenge."
Twitter user @tom_bourlet agrees. He does "well as the underdog", says Tom, but "England team [is] a different ballgame."
