Kat is a native Texan who is following her dreams, a dancer, and Actress who began her journey with a musical when she was just 8 years-old. She told us about her best projects to date and her plans for the future.
Acting beginnings
Sabina: Kat, can you tell us about your acting beginnings?
Kat: I fell in love with acting when I was 8 years-old and cast in my very first musical. I actually played a boy, in the Off-Broadway production of Peter Pan with Cathy Rigby. I had to cut all of my hair off to play Michael (the youngest boy), but it was worth the realisation that I wanted to be an actress.
After that, I added dance and gymnastics to my repertoire and never stopped performing! I was actually on the USA Gymnastics National Team at the age of fifteen and had to move all the way to Lake Placid, NY to live at the Olympic Training Center.
Sabina: Where do you think is the best place to be an actor and why?
Kat: In the past, the answer to that has always been Los Angeles, but I think that's changing. For me, Texas is a wonderful place to live and work as an actor. I'll always be a Texas girl at heart, and I actually just read that it's on the list of the "best places to live and work as a filmmaker". It's a good time to be in the South! The film industry has really exploded in Georgia, which is now the number one state in feature film productions, and there is also still a lot happening right next door in Louisiana.
Best projects to date
Sabina: What are your best projects to date?
Kat: I kind of got my start acting here in Texas when I was trying out for the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. There is a reality show that follows us through the audition process called Making The Team which airs on CMT and the year I tried out it was in its 10th season.
After that, I signed with an agent and began getting all different types of work. I most recently worked on an indie comedy that I'm really excited about.
Sabina: How did acting change your life?
Kat: To me, being an actress feels more like a way of life than a job. For one, putting myself in other people's shoes has taught me to be extremely empathetic.
It also gives me an excuse to constantly try new things and experience as much as I can in my life outside of work. The more that I can explore and learn as a person, the more that I can give to any character that I'm playing.
An upcoming film
Sabina: Do you have any interesting Film or TV projects coming up?
Kat: I'm glad you asked! The indie comedy that I worked on this past year, Support The Girls film is going to premiere at SXSW this March. Support The Girls is written and directed by Andrew Bujalski and stars Regina Hall and Haley Lu Richardson. It was an incredible experience getting to work with such talented actors and big names which also included James Le Gros, AJ Michalka, Dylan Gelula, Lea DeLaria, Jana Kramer and Brooklyn Decker. The premiere date/location will be announced any day now, so stay tuned!
