'Cloverfield' (2008)
This “found-footage” film revolves around a huge monster that attacks New York City while a group of people are having a farewell party for their friends. A Gizmodo writer describes it as “Blair Witch Project” meets “Godzilla.” The film spawned a few sequels of a sort.
'The Book of Eli' (2010) - Denzel Washington, Mila Kunis
“The Book of Eli” stars Denzel Washington and Mila Kunis and is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi film, possibly one of the best in the last ten years or so. Washington’s character carries the titular book, which is set to save mankind and everyone wants to take it from him.
'Lady in the Water' (2006) - Bryce Dallas Howard, Paul Giamatti and Jeffrey Wright
This M. Night Shyamalan film is about an apartment building superintendent who rescues what he believes is a young woman from the pool on the property. He finds out she is actually a character from a bedtime story, trying to make her way back to her home. He then works with the tenants on the property to protect her from creatures trying to keep her in our world. The film was rated as one of the director’s worst but was mislabelled as horror, when it should have been labelled as fantasy.
'Swordfish' (2001) - Hugh Jackman, Don Cheadle, John Travolta, Halle Berry
“Swordfish” relates to a secretive renegade counter-terrorist, who co-opts the greatest hacker in the world (who is trying to stay clean) to steal billions of the US Government’s dirty money. Great cast, spectacular opening scenes.
