India in a strong position after day one

Earlier in the day Indian captain Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat first.

Hanuma Vihari and debutant Mayank Agarwal walked out to bat on a pitch which seemed pretty flat.

Mayank was quick to score some runs getting the scoreboard moving, but Vihari seemed defensive. After putting up a 40-run opening stand with Mayank, Vihari got out to Pat Cummins scoring just eight runs from 66 balls. Chesteshwar Pujara walked in next and helped India to get through to lunch with a score of 57-1.

India dominated the second session with Pujara and Agarwal showing a lot of resilience. Agarwal quickly notched up his maiden Test fifty and marched up with his innings confidently. However, the second innings ended in an ideal way for the Australians as Cummins got Agarwal out for 72 runs with the last ball before tea. India's score stood at 123-2.

Skipper Kohli joined Pujara at the crease after tea.

The duo added unbeaten 92 runs in the third session. Pujara patiently crosses his 21st Test fifty, while Kohli batted positively at the other end. When the stumps were called on day one, India's score was 215 for 2 with Kohli and Pujara unbeaten at 47 and 68 respectively.
