If the UFC 205 weigh-ins are anything to go by, fans are in for a wild fight card. We are only 24 hours away from the biggest fight card in UFC history at Madison Square Garden and no UFC event is (sadly) the same without a fighter missing weight and Connor McGregor stealing the show with his antics.
Alves vs Miller
UFC veteran Thiago Alves (26-10-0) came nowhere close to making weight, weighing in at 162.6lbs for a 155lb fight.
As the New York Commission allow fighters to be within 5lbs of each other, Jim Miller (27-8-0 1 NC) re-hydrated with both now fighting at 163lb catch weight. As such, Alves will not face a fine for not making weight and must not weigh in any more than 173lbs on fight night.
Gastelum vs Cerrone
The second shock of the day came when Ultimate Fighter winner Kelvin Gastelum (13-2-0) tweeted stating that he wasn't even close to making the 7lb catch weight limit of 182lbs and that the fight between him and Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone (31-7-0) was cancelled. As Cerrone had weighed in earlier that day, he did not have the knowledge that Gastelum was going to miss weight and did not have an opportunity to re-hydrate to potentially make this a catch weight bout.
It seems as though Cerrone will get his chance to fight Matt Brown at UFC 206 in Toronto, but many fight fans will be disappointed for Cerrone that he did not get the opportunity to fight on such an historic card. This will definitely have repercussions for Gastelum, who has dropped from Middleweight and previously missed weight when fighting at Welterweight. Although Cerrone was disappointed, he did, in fact pocket $150,000 show money.
McGregor and Woodley Face Off
Of course, Connor McGregor (20-3-0) left his mark on the early weigh-ins, after a tense a face off with Tyron "The Chosen One" Woodley (16-3-0) caused both fighters to have a minor Twitter spat. It seems McGregor really is eyeing all those belts up.
With the press conferences and weigh-ins providing enough entertainment for any UFC fan, we are now on the home stretch for UFC 205. The consequences of every fight on this card have the potential to change almost every weight class ranking and also UFC history, with the possibility of crowning three new UFC champions in the same arena that saw Ali vs Frazier and Rocky Marciano vs Joe Louis. I'm sure UFC 205 will rival these historic occasions.
