Here are the top sports headlines of the day.
Football: Manchester United looses again
So much for all that early season optimism at Old Trafford. In the space of eight days, Manchester United have suffered three successive defeats that have provided an unwelcome reality check at a time when their rivals across the city are blazing a trail at the top of the Premier League. Mourinho talked about how “some individuals probably feel too much pressure” and also highlighted the defensive vulnerability that an impressive Watford side brutally exposed.
Tennis: Davis Cup semi-final
Great Britain's dreams of defending the Davis Cup are over after Dan Evans lost the semi-final decider to Leonardo Mayer in four sets on Sunday. Great Britain were unable to complete an unlikely recovery from the 0-2 deficit accrued on the opening day, even with the Argentinian’s best player Jaun Martin Del Potro sitting it out.
F1: Nico Rosberg wins the Singapore GP
Nico Rosberg praised his Mercedes team after the win that enabled him to retake the world championship lead from Lewis Hamilton.
The German’s victory came after a thrilling finale in which he just edged out Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo, who was on fresher rubber and chasing Rosberg down right to the flag.
The result was especially appreciated at Mercedes, a year after coming here and being a second a lap off the pace.
Boxing: Liam Smith loses WBO title
The Englishman walked into the lion's de in Texas, taking on the Mexican hero Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez. Liam Smith had his moments, most notably in the fourth and fifth rounds which saw Alvarez come under sustained pressure. Yet, unfortunately for this member of a proud Liverpudlian band of Boxing brothers, it just wasn't enough. This was the first experience of defeat in his career.
Golf: In Gee Chun sets major record
The South Korean shot the lowest ever 72-hole score at a major to win the Evian Championship on Sunday. She finished 21 under par, breaking the record of 20 under set by Henrik Stenson at this year's Open and Jason Day at the 2015 PGA Championship.
