The long wait is over as Big Little Lies is returning to the small screen for a second season along with Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman.

Tale of murder and mischief

The show is based on a same-title best-selling novel by award-winning author Liane Moriarty and tells the tale of murder and mischief in a small town showcased through the lives of three very different mothers and wives. The original cast of the award-winning production saw the likes of Adam Scott, Zoë Kravitz, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, James Tupper, Alexander Skarsgård and Iain Armitage who are all rumoured to be familiar faces for season two.

HBO's Casey Bloys shared in the excitement and revealed she was delighted to officially announce the revival of Big Little Lies to HBO. She went on to share the good news with avid viewers as she expressed pride and gratitude to Reece Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman for all their hard work on the previous season stating they were forces to be reckoned with. She also mentioned David Kelley as she sang his praises for his "beautiful scripts". She looks forward to working with the talented group of artists while the world looks on in anticipation excited to view the latest episodes.

New director for season two

The second instalment will see a new director with Andrea Arnold joining the cast and crew for the seven-episode season.

She will also be executive producer with Reece and Nicole. The British director has long worked on successful shows prior to joining Big Little Lies including the likes of American Honey and Wuthering Heights. Andrea most recently teamed up with none other than Jill Soloway as the director to join the crew for the Amazon series Transparent.

Cast and crew excited to be back

Nicole Kidman revealed her thoughts on coming back to the award-winning set and proclaimed the show was conceived thanks to Liane Moriarty's brainchild with her book and then realised by David Kelley. She said the show is now safely in the hands of "visionary filmmaker" Andrea Arnold and we couldn't agree more.

Big Little Lies debut was a resounding success and it walked away with many awards, including a few Emmys.

Fellow cast and crew member Reece Witherspoon was nothing short of excited as she told the press how thrilled she was to be bringing back such a talented team of artists to work on the show. She expressed through the show she is able to showcase various Monterey families and to share their stories with a loving audience. And my guess is it is for this very reason the show has been so well received. The scripts and characters are championed by their stories and the audience loves them for it.
