Rolling Stones frontman Sir Mick Jagger has become a father for the eighth time in his life at the age of 73. His girlfriend Melanie Hamrick, a 29-year-old ballerina, gave birth to a baby boy today in New York.
A statement from Jagger’s publicist said that “Mick was at the hospital for the arrival.” It also said, “Mother and baby are doing well and we request that the media respect their privacy at this time.”
The couple has an unusual parenting arrangement
Jagger and Hamrick have agreed to a somewhat strange arrangement for parenting the boy. They are not planning to marry, but they will raise the child together.
It has been arranged that, as Jagger will be very busy on tour and working (and is also very old), Hamrick will do the majority of raising the child.
Legendary musician Jagger will help Hamrick in finding a home in America, where she will be able to live comfortably and raise the child. While he will not be around, Jagger will be giving Hamrick $150,000 (£119,000) each year (not counting housing fees, which he will pay on top of that) until the boy is eighteen years old, in order to give her the financial support she needs to raise him. He will also pay for his son’s school fees, which after high school when he goes off to college could be up to $500,000 (£396,000).
Jagger has apparently “found a new found love for the band again” as The Rolling Stones are bringing out an out-of-character blues album next year.
This newfound commitment to the band could mean that the busybody rocker will have even less time to raise his child.
New son is the latest in Jagger’s eight-child roster
The new addition is much his half-siblings’ junior. Jagger’s other children are daughter Karis, 46, daughter Jade, 45, daughter Lizzie, 32, son James, 31, daughter Georgia, 24, son Gabriel, 18, and son Lucas, 17.
The boy is Jagger’s first child with Hamrick, who he has been dating since 2014, when they got together following the tragic suicide of his fashion designer girlfriend L’Wren Scott, who had been his partner for thirteen years prior to her death.
