Independence Day 2 has finally started shooting. It seems that Jeff Goldblum is following Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson's footsteps, because he made sure that the audience saw the production's shooting after he took a selfie with the movie's producer, Dean Devlin. The selfie has since gone viral on the web. After the first glimpse of the orcs from the Warcraft movie, the audience again gets something to chew on.
It has been nearly 20 years since Roland Emmerich's epic alien invasion movie, Independence Day came out in 1996. The movie was a big hit starring a young Will Smith, Bill Pullman, and of course Jeff Goldblum, the scientist who saved the world from the aliens at the end of the movie.
It's safe to say that Mr. Emmerich, famous for his catastrophe movies in which the Earth always faces destruction by natures' forces, created a whole new genre with invasive aliens destroying the Earth. In the following decade, War of the Worlds (2005) and Battle: LA (2011) tried to copy Independence Day's success, futilely.
Next year, Mr. Emmerich himself will try to revive the genre with the sequel of his 1996 movie. When the second instalment was finally announced, it was long time due. Unfortunately, after the predicament of waiting, waiting and more waiting, Will Smith got tired of it, and announced that he would not return for the sequel. This still didn't scare away Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman from the reunion, the latter playing the U.S.
President in 1996.
They will be joined by Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Travis Tope, Joey King, Maika Monroe and Sela Ward. Judd Hirsch also returns as the father of Jeff Goldblum's character, David Levinson.
Goldblum's selfie's blue background indicates that Mr. Emmerich remains true to his name, and we can expect some massive explosions and destructions from the sequel. The world will be at peril once again as the alien race returns to conquer the Earth in June 2016. Luckily for us, Mr. Goldblum and his crew will be ready for them.
