James Gunn, the writer and director of the first two instalments of the “Guardians of the Galaxy” series has all but confirmed that there will be a third one. This should come as no surprise to some, given the colossal $700 million+ take of the first Film which is even more impressive given how unexpected the success was, but for a while there, there was a little bit of uncertainty over the possibility of a third solo “Guardians” outing.
Gunn said, during an interview with Complex, “There will be a “Guardians 3,” that’s for sure.” He simply mentioned that he and the guys at Marvel are “trying to figure it out.” It seems silly for Disney to not want as many “Guardians of the Galaxy” films as it can get, but an official confirmation of the threequel being in the works has yet to come through.
Perhaps they’re waiting for the unlikely blockbuster’s sophomore try to come out first to see if they can catch lighting in a bottle twice before betting on them catching it a third time.
The GOTG are joining the Avengers next year
While the first “Guardians of the Galaxy” was a smash hit across the globe and the endearing characters really clicked with audiences and the critics loved it and the second (due to be released in cinemas on 5 May) will surely match or even exceed that success, a third film has not always been a sure thing. The hectic Marvel schedule means they have to be very precious with what films they decide to get made. Characters getting their first solo films like “Captain Marvel” and “Black Panther” and sequels that double as team-ups like “Captain America: Civil War” and “Thor: Ragnarok” leave very little room in the schedule for the films that audiences actually want to see and don’t just exist because they serve a purpose to the overarching behemoth storyline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Plus, the “Guardians of the Galaxy” characters are joining the Avengers in their next movie “Avengers: Infinity War,” so once they’re mixing with Cap and Tony Stark and Thor and Ant-Man on Earth, it might be tricky getting them back into space for their own adventures. But no “Guardians 3” would be a crime.
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” will be released in cinemas on 5 May this year. And it’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” so expect great things.
