Sir Elton John demonstrated both his generous nature and his talents as the ultimate showman this week in London. Not only did the celebrated popstar donate a Yamaha piano to the famous St Pancras International Station but the ‘Rocket Man’ then proceeded to delight the amazed commuters by treating them to an impromptu performance on it.
Benevolent celebrity
Well known for his benevolence after a lifetime full of charity fundraising events, Sir Elton also signed the donated instrument and left a heartfelt message behind. His note read: “Enjoy this piano!
It’s a gift. Love, Elton John x.”
Crowd gathered to watch
As fans and passers-by recognised the celebrity in their midst, the 68-year-old British star drew a sizeable crowd to catch his unexpected Show. Many onlookers reached for their mobile phones to capture the moment on camera for posterity and to no doubt ensure that their friends had solid evidence of what they were amazed to be witnessing first-hand.
As the well-wishers added their own encouragement to the megastar by clapping and cheering, Sir Elton – wearing a typically colourful and elegant scarf - responded by blowing kisses to the crowd before departing the scene with his minder in attendance.
Famed for piano collection
The piano was left behind to add to those instruments already in place at the station.
St Pancras is not simply renowned as a busy transport hub, it is also famed for its pianos which are freely available for the public to use.
Social media reaction
Social media was abuzz with people who had witnessed the brief appearance by the star musician and singer. One amazed commuter tweeted that on passing through the station “Elton John was there playing the piano he has just donated."
Instagram message to fans
Never one to be lost for words, the singer posted a couple of photos on his Instagram account after the visit to the station.
With a clear reference to his popular track “Your Song” in mind, he stated: “My gift is my song and this piano's for you.” Easing off in years to come
Although Elton has suggested that he plans to ease off his public appearances in the years to come as his children take precedence, he clearly doesn’t intend to stay out of the limelight completely.
After five decades in the business and sales of more than 300 million records, he seems determined to continue making his mark.
His appearance on this week’s “The Graham Norton Show” was filled with witty moments and plenty of his usual energy. He also treated the prominent guests – including “Zoolander 2” stars Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson – to a song from his ever-expanding repertoire.
Elton is currently busy promoting his latest album “Wonderful Crazy Night” which was released this week.
