Ajax is through to the Europa League Final! Ajax has secured a place in their first Europen Final in 21 years, after holding on to resist a tight second leg fight with Lyon in France, to win their spot in the Europa League final. They haven't been in a European Final since 1996. Lyon suffered three defeats in their last five games and only won 4 in 12 games while Ajax is on form and hungry to enter the finals of the Europa League and maybe even win it.
After several attempts, the Ajax side got through with Dolberg running into space to create a chance where he' was alone with the keeper and with an intelligent chip past the Lyon keeper scored a crucial away goal for Ajax.
This was the 6th goal in 12 matches for the 19-year-old striker, and made the goal difference on aggregate to 1-5, with Ajax having the five goals.
Dolberg was scouted and brought into Ajax by the same scout who scouted Zlatan Ibrahimovich. He scored the goal in the 27th minute. Later on in the 43rd minute, after countless attempts by Lyon to create chances and make them count, their break came when Lacazette got fouled in the box and won a penalty. Lacazette took the penalty professionally and scored leaving the Ajax keeper jumping to the opposite side. He scored the penalty in the 44th minute, making it his 5th goal in 8 matches and his 32nd goal of the season.
A minute and a half later, guess who's placed perfectly to score another beautiful goal for Lyon?
You guessed it -- Lacazette, taking a pass in the box scored in the left corner of the goal in the 45 minute, a minute into extra time. It was his 6th goal in 8 matches and his 33rd goal of the season. This changed the score to 3-5 aggregate, leaving 2 goals difference for Lyon to get even with Ajax and go into extra time and maybe penalties.
Despite there only being a deficit of 2 goals and having scored 2 in the first half you would think that it would be expected for 2 more goals or more to be scored in the second half. Well, that wasn't to be but not for lack of trying, as both sides were hungry and fighting to retain the defense and still create chances and get goals so as to propel them to the finals.
That didn't happen though as the second half was largely goalless.
Late into the second half though, at the 80th minute, there was a headed effort by substitute Ghezzal which got deflected and into the middle of the Ajax goalkeepers leg, for a late goal for Lyon. This sparked in new enthusiasm as they only needed one goal without conceding to force extra time with the Lyon fans not disappointing in giving the desired atmosphere motivating their team.
When and where is the Europa League Final?
The game ended with that last effort which left the aggregate goals at 4-5, thereby Lyon won the game but lost on aggregate. Ajax won their place to face off against Manchester United in Stockholm. The game will be played at the Friends Arena on Wednesday the 24th of May, at 7 pm on BT Sport2. The win will mean a lot to either team, but the hungriest one, most deserving or the lucky one will get it, depending on how the game goes.
