Liverpool target Burnley centre-back

Liverpool's defence has been far from perfect this season, with the team leaking goals at the back which has cost them vital points going into the end of the season.

According to the Daily Mirror, Liverpool has reached personal terms with Burnley defender Michael Keane after impressing the club from his appearances this season.

Manchester United, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in the 24-year-old who has had a brilliant first season in the Premier League. However, it is thought that Klopp is leading the race for the Burnley defender after deciding he needs to improve his defence in time for next season.

Liverpool's toughest competition comes from Manchester United with Michael Kane originally coming up through the ranks at the Manchester club. For this reason it is thought that Keane would be more interested in a move to the Red Devils, however, Jose Mourinho has shown little interest in the English defender which could rule out the move altogether.

As well as Michael Keane, it is widely understood that Liverpool is interested in signing Virgil Van Dijk who is Klopp's first choice signing this summer according to numerous reports. However, the Southampton manager has already come out and said that he will not be sold this summer.

What does the future hold for current defenders?

Liverpool outcast Mamadou Sakho looks like his Liverpool career is over, with Klopp effectively removing him from the team and will look to sell him this summer.

However, that could prove to be a hard task with Sakho sustaining a long-term injury whilst on loan at Crystal Palace this season. Should Liverpool sign Michael Kane, Jurgen Klopp will have to decide whether to drop Joel Matip or Dejan Lovren as a centre-back pairing.

There is no doubt that Liverpool's defence has been the massive let down for potential title pushes in previous years with Liverpool having defensive problems for years now.

Jurgen Klopp will hope to address this issue in the summer and he believes that Michael Keane could be the answer to that question.

It is one of Liverpool's most important transfer windows in a very long time and should Jurgen Klopp's team get into the Champions League, Liverpool fans will be hoping for a very big summer with the priority lying in defence. It is said that Jurgen Klopp is interested in signing two new defenders this summer.
