It hasn’t been easy for Manchester United since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down as the manager in 2013 after 27 trophy filled years at the club.

Since the Scot retired, the side have failed to reclaim the Premier League trophy, have sacked two managers, and look a shadow of their former selves.

The Manchester side will be hoping to regain the bragging rights over rivals Manchester City under new manager José Mourinho.

When it comes to signing players, Manchester United have the resources to sign just about any player on the planet, as seen with their record breaking pursuit of Paul Pogba.

Though they have shown glimpses of improvement, fans will hoping the spending spree continues in the future.

Here is a list of five players that could help turn around the teams fortunes.

Antoine Griezmann

Griezmann is one player many fans across Europe will be hoping their team signs. The Frenchman has impressed for both his national team, as well as for Atlético Madrid, with whom he has scoredan impressive 50 goals in 81 matches in La Liga.

The 25-year-old won’t be cheap however, and it will be a struggle to take him away from the Spanish side who are chasing for the La Liga title once again. If he did opt to leave in the summer however, whoever signs him will be getting a very special player who can control and win matches almost by himself.

José Fonte

Fonte has been impressing at the heart of Southampton's defence since 2010, proving to be one of the most reliable centre backs in the Premier league. Manchester United were said to be interested in the Portuguese defender last summer, but a move never materialised.

Though 32-years-old now, the defender would prove to be a solid signing for the Red Devils who need some composure at the back.

A move during the winter transfer could be just what the side need as they fightto finish in the top four once again.

Fabinho

As well as a centre back, the Red Devils also need a formidable right back if they are to challenge for more trophies. Monaco’s right back, Fabinho looks to be one of the most promising around at the moment, and Manchester United have been said to be interested in the past.

With Matteo Darmian failing to impress manager Jose Mourhino and question marks remaining over winger turned defender Antonio Valencia, Fabinho may be a viable option for the future.

Romelu Lukaku

Though Zlatan Ibrahimović is currently playing upfront for the Manchester side, the veteran striker is 35-years-old, and is sadly coming to the end of his career. There are also a number of strikers, including Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial who can play up front, but with Rooney’s goal return also dipping as of late, a new striker is needed.

There a number of young talented strikers across Europe that can fill the void, Lukaku however, would be a smart option for United. The Everton striker is a big and powerful player, who has improved over the years playing in England.

He has scored an impressive 66 league goals since moving to England, and at only 23-years-old, he could betheir striker for a number of years.

Toni Kroos

This signingwould be difficult. Kroos is the type of midfielder that Manchester United have needed for a while.Though they have a seemingly never ending stream of money, the German international plays for Real Madrid, who themselves aren’t lacking in the financial department.

The Premier League side are in need ofa player that can control games asPaul Scholes did to perfection for years. Although Carrick is good enough, at the age of 35, he’s coming to the end of his playing career. If they could somehow pull themove off, the 26-year-old may just be the smartest piece of business the team could make.
