It can be quite challenging to determine which player´s better than other. However, a famous newspaper decided to give this controversial endeavor a chance. They came up with their own list of the top 100 Football players in 2014 and caused quite a bit of controversy. Even when some people might feel that the top 100 list should include other players, we will concentrate on the very top, the places where controversy can reach high temperatures, the very top five.

Candidate Nº 1 Lionel Messi

Two words immediately come to mind when we mention football star Lionel Messi: greatness and controversy.

This outstanding man has been marked with controversy for almost all of his professional career. One the one hand, people just seem to be unable to avoid comparison with other football legends such as Ronaldo, Pele and Maradona. However, what should be highlighted is that to even be thrown in such a mix and to be compared with this legends should be more of an honor than a drawback.

Back to the best football players in 2014, we should point out that even if Messi is considered to be the best player in the world, we cannot and will not say he was the very best player in 2014. This was, in our opinion, not the best year for him. He lost championships, did not conquer the World Cup (yet again) and he could not best other players clearly and beyond doubt as he had been doing for the past 5 years (at least).

Candidate Nº 2 Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano is a bit of an enigma. He is a player that you can either love or hate, but under no circumstances can he be ignored. He is considered a destructive and almost unstoppable force. On 2014 we saw him score goals constantly, each one with a different approach. Such versatility could easily make him No. 1 in our list, but the fact that he performed somewhat poorly during the World Cup could easily send him back. As previous years, the greatest match was not only the World Cup Final as there is another match constantly going on: who was the best football player in 2014, Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo (or even a third name we did not consider)?
