The young stars from the hit Channel 4 series 'Gogglebox' have filmed an advert telling viewers that they need to register in order to vote on 7th May. Channel 4 has teamed up with the Electoral Commission to produce the commercial which will run for three weeks on Channel 4, E4, 4 Music and All 4, Channel 4's new digital Television service which is replacing 4 On Demand.

The advert stars Scarlett Moffatt, Tom Malone, Shaun Malone, Eve Woerdenweber and 'silent' Jay Makin. In the familiar setting of their living rooms, they speak about having registered to vote and why you should too.

The first outing of the ad will air during Friday's edition of Gogglebox on Channel 4.

The current parliament will be dissolved on Monday 30th March, meaning the campaign for the election has officially begun. The public has until Monday 20th April to register to vote. The Electoral Commission hopes this new campaign will encourage people to make sure they register and vote in the election. The nation will go to the polls on Thursday 7th May.

Michael Abbott, Head of Campaigns at the Electoral Commission said: "Our partnership with Gogglebox is a fantastic opportunity to reach millions of TV viewers and spread the message that the only way to have a vote at the General Election is to be on the electoral register.

The show has a particular following amongst young people and we know that 18-24 year olds are less likely to be registered."

It is believed to be the first time that a TV production company has produced something of this nature. Studio Lambert, the team behind Gogglebox, is responsible for the advert. It is narrated by Caroline Aherne, who voices the award-winning Gogglebox.

Tania Alexander, Gogglebox Executive Producer, said: "This was a great opportunity to work with the Electoral Commission and some of the Gogglebox cast to raise awareness of an important cause." The current series is proving more popular than ever attracting near 4 million viewers and beating the competition in the tough 9pm slot.
