Gun or knife crime has claimed the life of the 24th teenage victim in the capital this year, making 2017 the worst year for teenage homicide since 2008. The stabbing of an 18-year-old male in Northolt has taken the grim toll to one of the highest levels the capital has ever seen - and we are not even out of the month of November yet. A statement by the Metropolitan Police said that a murder investigation has been launched after the victim sadly passed away from his injuries today (November 21). The Met Police said they were called just before 22:30hrs on Saturday, November 18 to Newnham Close, Northolt to reports that a teenager had been stabbed.
Officers attended the scene along with the London Ambulance Service and the London Air Ambulance. The 18-year-old male was taken to a London hospital where he remained in a life-threatening condition until he sadly passed away three days later. His family have been informed and a post-mortem is scheduled to take place.
Murders have risen this year
The fatal stabbing of the 18-year-old in Northolt was the second teenager to be murdered on the streets of the capital in the past week. Last Thursday, November 16, police were called at 23:14hrs to reports of a group of males armed with weapons in Mount Pleasant Road E17. At the scene in Walthamstow, an 18-year-old male was found suffering a stab wound to the stomach, he was taken to an East London hospital for treatment but tragically passed away on Monday, November 20.
The next of kin have been informed and a post-mortem is scheduled to take place.
These statements have become all too depressingly familiar recently. Murders have risen this year in London, and these latest killings take the total number of murders to 6 in the last 9 days. London has long suffered from problems involving knife and gun crime, but this latest uptick in violent attacks is sure to generate concern among Londoners.
Over 30 people aged 20 or below have been murdered in the capital this year and this epidemic of knife and gun killings is robbing us of a young generation. A 17-year-old male has been arrested in relation to the Northolt attack and bailed to return to the police station in mid-December. No arrests thus far have been made in relation to the Walthamstow murder.
