This year’s Golden Globe nominees reflect a strong British representation with Benedict Cumberbatch and Hugh Grant among those actors vying for a coveted best actor award this year. Compelling BBC dramas “Bodyguard” and “Killing Eve” have also been nominated in their award’s category, besides a plethora of British actresses including Emily Blunt, Rosamund Pike and Olivia Colman.

The 6th January Los Angeles’ extravaganza will be hosted by the Canadian “Grey’s Anatomy” actress Sandra Oh and the comedian Andy Samberg of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” fame, with Britain’s extremely talented television and Film actors and actresses expected to figure prominently.

Cumberbatch and Grant nominated

Former “Sherlock” star Cumberbatch features in the limited series category, due reward for his portrayal of the title role in Sky Atlantic’s adaptation “Patrick Melrose”, based on the novels by Edward St Aubyn. Contending with him for that award will be the affable Grant, who breathed fresh life into the role of the shamed politician Jeremy Thorpe in “A Very English Scandal”, another major BBC success.

Grant’s co-star in that production, Ben Whishaw is also nominated for best-supporting actor.

'Bodyguard' and 'Killing Eve' contend

The BBC has a long tradition of producing top quality dramas for television and this year has been no exception. “Bodyguard” became must-see viewing in many households and “Killing Eve” also became a Saturday night smash hit with the British viewing public. Both excellent dramas will battle it out at the Golden Globes for the best drama series, with host Oh no doubt keenly interested in the outcome having played lead character Eve Polastri in “Killing Eve” for which she also gets a Golden Globe nomination herself.

Richard Madden’s success continues

The popularity of the edge of your seat thriller “Bodyguard” has drawn rich praise for the polished performances of Keeley Hawes, but especially for Richard Madden.

His undoubted strong screen persona has led to many observers suggesting that James Bond stardom may be in the pipeline, but for now, he can look forward to the possibility of the best actor Golden Globe in a drama award coming his way.

Diverse best film nominations

Diversity seems to be the name of the game in the best film (drama) category, where Marvel superhero tale “Black Panther” will battle it out with the “Queen” / Freddie Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” and the Lady Gaga vehicle “A Star Is Born”. Stiff competition has been added to the list of nominations, with the addition of Spike Lee’s outrageous comedy-drama “BlacKkKlansman” and the romantic tale “If Beale Street Could Talk”.
