San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers - 100 John F Kennedy Drive, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, California, USA
The San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers is home to more than 2,000 varieties of plants. In the East Wing are the aquatic plants, including giant Amazon Lilies. This is the place to see unusual and lovely flowers rarely seen elsewhere. Overhead in the conservatory can be seen the beautiful but deadly Nepenthes pitcher plants (like that pictured) which lure insects through a flower-like opening at the top of the flower, then dissolve them in digestive enzymes.
The Flowers of Kaffeklubben Island, Greenland
This out of the way glacial island is located off Cape Morris Jessup in Greenland. Here two types of flowering plants manage to bloom in summer, despite the island’s closeness to the arctic pole. The Purple Saxifrage and the Arctic Poppy bravely bloom during the 30-day summers the island has and for a little while each year, the island is a place of beauty, quite unlike its normal rugged, dry and rocky conditions.
The Bridge of Flowers - Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, USA
Shelburne Falls in Massachusetts has the only flower bridge of its kind in the world. The 400 ft bridge is covered with flowers, planned so they continuously bloom from April to October each year. There are 500 different varieties of vines, flowers and shrubs, many of which are rare varieties. The bridge was originally a trolley bridge built in 1908 and after the railway there went out of business in 1929 it was converted by a local horticulturist.
Wisteria Tunnel - Kawachi Fuji Gardens, Kitakyushu, Japan
You have to plan your visit to this wondrous place carefully, as the wisteria only blooms in late April or early May. The wisteria is an ornamental vine, with gracefully hanging flowers in various pastel shades. While all of the Kawachi Fuji Gardens is a worthwhile visit, walking through this tunnel of around 150 plants is an almost magical experience.
Carlsbad Flower Fields - 5704 Paseo Del Norte Carlsbad, California
This is another magical spot, which should be visited during spring. The flowers grow on a hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Carlsbad each March and give a stunningly vibrant colour show. The flower fields are part of a commercial flower industry in the area and 50 acres of ranunculus are planted each year for their bulbs.
