After a fire destroyed the zoo’s indoor forest, the public leapt to Chester Zoo’s aid. The fire killed several rare species of fish and birds, while orang-utans, macaques and gibbons were lured away from the flames with bananas. The zoo’s target was £60,000 but the general public exceeded that figure by raising over £120,000 in donations. The zoo was “overwhelmed” with the generosity, concern and love shown by so many people wishing to help. The balance will be used for conservation projects.
