German Football club Borussia Dortmund's stadium Signal Iduna Park is top of the table in Europe's average attendance rankings according to a survey conducted by Portuguese sports daily A Bola.

The top ten list features just one Portuguese club in S.L.Benfica who play in the Estadio da Luz stadium which is ranked 8th with an average attendance of 55,174 spectators in the 2016/17 campaign - an increase on last season's average of 50,322. Spanish giants FC Barcelona's Camp Nou stadium is second with an average attendance of 79,532 fans. That is 9,796 more than fierce rivals Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu stadium that is 5th on the list boasting an average of 69,736.

English club Manchester United who play at Old Trafford are third behind FC Barcelona with an average of 75,282 spectators at every home game.

No Serie A club in the top ten

Not a single Italian football club features in the top ten rankings as the average attendance in the league has steadily decreased in recent years. And there is a legitimate reason for that. Unlike the English Premier League, all Serie A games are shown live on television which does not help in filling up the seats in stadiums. Fans can stay at home and enjoy the games in the comfort of their living rooms.

Milan clubs Internazionale and AC Milan who play in the Giuseppe Meazza stadium or the San Siro that boasts an impressive seating capacity of 80,018, sometimes have attendances lower than Championship clubs.

French side Olympique Marseille play in the 67,394 sitter Stade Velodrome. But despite that, not a single Ligue 1 side has made it to the top ten.
