5 new series and films streaming on Netflix in May

Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini star as two grieving widows in this dark comedy. Once they team up, they get up to all sorts of nefarious things, which goes to prove the saying “misery loves company.” Neither really knows how to take sympathy from neighbours and friends.

“Tuca & Bertie” is an animated comedy series from animator Lisa Hanawalt and tells the stories of a toucan (voiced by Tiffany Haddish) and a songbird (voiced by Ali Wong). As Netflix describes it, they are just “two ride-or-fly BFFs winging life together.

“Flinch” is a new comedy reality/game show series based in Ireland. It’s a game show where contestants are challenged not to flinch in certain unsavoury circumstances. If they do happen to flinch, there are consequences to face. The person who flinches the least will be crowned the winner.

This dystopian sci-fi film stars Sennia Nanua, Glenn Close, Gemma Arterton and Paddy Considine. Set in the near future, humanity has been almost wiped out by a mutated fungal disease that takes away a person's free will and makes them into flesh-eating “hungries.” There is a small group of children who appear to be immune to the disease and are being studied at an army base in rural England, while being subjected to cruel experiments.

“Jailbirds” is a series about a women’s prison in Sacramento, USA. Unlike “Orange is the New Black,” this series is the real deal, with interviews with prisoners and plenty of drama between veteran inmates and those incarcerated for the first time.
