A total of 15 wickets fell in a see-saw opening day of the first Test between South Africa and Pakistan at the SuperSport Park in Centurion, Pretoria. Pakistan was bowled out for just 181 runs in the first innings.

South Africa was able to manage 127 for the loss of five wickets. The hosts are still trailing by 54 runs.

Dale Steyn and Temba Bavuma will be back on the pitch facing the Pakistani quicks on day two on Thursday, December 27, 2018.

The second day's play will start at 10:00 AM SAST, 1:00 PM PST.

Match situation balanced after day one

After electing to bat first, Pakistan got off to a horrible start. At 17/2, Pakistan started to steady the ship. None of the Pakistani batsmen got a big score. The South African pace attack kept them quiet for most the innings.

Duanne Oliver's fiery spell once had the visitors struggling at 111 for 8.

Babar Azam took the attack on the opposition as he stroked a quickfire fifty. After partnering with Hasan Ali for 67 runs, Azam finally got out for 71 runs.

Pakistan finally slipped to 181 all-out. Oliver picked up six wickets for the Proteas while Kagiso Rabada and Dale Steyn got three and one wickets each.

The hosts didn't start well either. After an initial good beginning, they found themselves struggling at 43-4 as three wickets fell in two overs.

Thenius de Bruyn and Temba Bavuma controlled the innings with their 69 runs stand.

After de Bruyn fell for a hard-fought 29, Bavuma who stayed unbeaten at 38 runs carried the innings till the end of day's play. Dale Steyn was not-out at 13 runs at the other end. At stumps on day one, South Africa was at 127-5, still trailing by 54 runs.

For Pakistan, Mohammad Amir and Shaheen Afridi bagged two wickets while Hasan Ali got one wicket.
