Day three will start at 10:00 AM local, 4:30 AM GMT on Wednesday, November 8, 2018.

England ended day one at 321/8 in the ongoing first Test against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Cricket Stadium. Struggling at one point, England pulled things back with debutant Ben Foakes scoring 87 runs by the end of the first day.

For Sri Lanka, Dilruwan Perera picked up four wickets to put the tourists at the hostile position.

Sri Lanka take early wickets

Earlier in the day, England captain Joe Root won the toss and elected to bat first. Sri Lanka brilliantly started the day as Suranga Lakmal picked up two wickets in the third over of the day to put England at 10/2.

Keaton Jennings and Root combined for a 65-run partnership next, but the latter lost his stumps to Rangana Herath for 35 runs.

England didn't seem to get going as Jennings, and Ben Stokes fell in quick succession, and England found themselves struggling at 104/5. Jos Butler and debutant Foakes started building a partnership in search for a recovery for the tourists. But Perera got Butler out after a fighting knock of 38 runs.

Foakes leads the rescue act

Foakes meanwhile continued his maiden Test innings as Sam Curran joined him.

The duo batted for close to 34 overs as the pressure seemed to have transferred onto the hosts now. The partnership yielded 88 runs and took England to a respectable position. Curran got out unluckily for 48 runs, but his Surrey teammate continued to march his way to a Test ton on debut.

Adil Rashid made a quick-fire 35 runs before falling towards the end of the day. At stumps on day one, England found themselves at a formidable position with 321 runs on the boards and two wickets still in the bank. Jack Leach and Foakes will resume their innings on 14 and 87 runs respectively when England come to bat again on day two of the Galle Test.
