With the recent introduction of season 3 of “Stranger Things,” Netflix’s viewing record has again been broken. According to the streaming giant, over 40 million households have streamed the new season, with around 18 million having watched every single episode of season 3 and that is only since 4th of July 2019.

As noted by the BBC, Netflix started sharing its viewership figures in January, when the horror Film “Bird Box” topped the charts. In that case, 80 million watched the film during a four week period. Next in line was “Umbrella Academy,” a superhero/fantasy show which received 45 million viewers in the first month.

Now in just a few days, “Stranger Things” is topping the charts and still going. Netflix has, however, started giving viewership by household, rather than the total number of viewers, who have seen the series. They say they count it as a view when a subscriber has watched a minimum of 70 percent of an episode or movie.

'Stranger Things' have happened – three times now

The popular series tells the story of a group of kids in the 1980s in a fictional town in Indiana. This is a place where scary supernatural things happen, featuring a separate universe called the “Upside Down.” The show has been popular since it first released in 2016, and people are already clamouring for a fourth season.

Spoiler alert: At the end of season 3 it appears that police chief Jim Hopper is no longer with us and during the titles, we travel to a fictional town in Russia, where the Russians appear to have a Demogorgon, to which they are feeding prisoners.

A major hint is made at this time when someone says “not the American” which reveals an American citizen has been taken prisoner by the Russians. Now fans are working overtime with theories as to who that American could be. Many fans have pointed out that when Joyce destroyed the machine, Hopper had been standing on a platform next to it, but as it blows up, the platform is empty.

There is also a reveal that Eleven may have lost her powers.

Duffer Brothers make hints on season 4 of ‘Stranger Things’

The co-creators of “Stranger Things” have apparently already been thinking about what to include in season 4. Fans have been clamouring to ask whether Hopper is really dead, just as he was finally getting somewhere with his romantic relationship with Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder).

They say, why would they let Joyce finally agree to a date and then kill him off? Fans also want to know if El will ever get her superpowers back.

The Duffer Brothers, while not officially confirming a season 4, have already warned fans that season 4 will have a “very different” feel to it. Matt Duffer spoke to Entertainment Weekly, saying the next season will open things up a little, allowing the story to go into different areas outside the town of Hawkins. Digital Spy poses the question that different areas could include Russia, especially after that little tease at the end of episode 8.

Ross Duffer said they don’t want to write themselves into a corner, so they are having a few early discussions on the right way to go with the fourth season of "Stranger Things.". He said they have the “broad strokes,” i.e. the Russian connection, and they are both excited about how things will go.

In the meantime, fans can stream season 3 of “Stranger Things” on Netflix and await news of a future season 4.
