Today the Indian governments had something to cheer. After a lapse of a year Vijay Mallya the fugitive businessman was arrested by Scotland yard and produced in court. The judge of the Westminster court, after hearing the case granted bail to Vijay Mallya inside 3 hours. This was expected, but the fact that he was arrested is itself big news. Mallya is one of the richest men in India and faces charges against him that he had swindled the government and the banks of rupees 9000 crores and then fled to England. When the British prime minister had visited India the Modi government had brought forward the case of 18 Indians in England who are facing various charges and the absconding Vijay Mallya was at the top of the list.

Big news

The arrest of Mallya is indeed big news but the battle head is not going to be easy. Mallya is a rich man and has a battery of lawyers and now the court in English will decide on the extradition of Vijay Mallya to face criminal charges in India. The BJP government and Modi have made it clear that they would like to get Mallya back but it's not going to be a cakewalk. The BJP has also to explain how Vijay Mallya was allowed to go abroad when there were serious charges pending against him.He was also elected to the Rajya Sabha, the Upper house of parliament with the support of the BJP.

Arrest

The arrest, however, is something new in the history of Indo- British relations. No Indian has ever been arrested for crimes in India.

Even a man charged with murder is allowed to stay on in England. Modi has brought in pressure on the U K government and he deserves credit for it. The Indian government along with Mallya have also asked for the extradition of Lalit Modi Modi, the previous chairman of the Indian Premier League who had also absconded to England
