Huawei is among the most popular smartphone brands based out of China. Lately, they have been releasing some very good VFM smartphones with high-end configurations. Honor 7 released in July 2015 is their flagship phone under the Honor sub-brand. It is a popular and long-running series and a successor to the Honor 6 released in 2014.

Display & Design

Huawei Honor 7 boasts a beautiful metallic body. It is sleek and compact as well as ergonomically design to fit in palms easily. The screen size is 5.2” with the display resolution of 1920x1080 (Full HD).

The technology used is IPS-NEO LCD. It is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. It has a contrast ratio of 1500:1 and a color saturation at 85% which is quite high. Size dimensions are 143.2 x 71.9 x 8.5 mm.

Hardware and Features

The smartphone is powered by an in-house custom-made chipset HiSilicon Kirin 935. 2.2Ghz x 4 Cores and 1.5Ghz x 4 cores. This processor competes with the high-end Snapdragon and Exynos Processors. The phone features 3GB RAM. It is built on top of Android 5.0 Lollipop (upgradable to 6.0 Marshmallow) with Huawei’s custom skin called as ‘Emotion UI 3.1’ The phone is also equipped with the typical array of sensors like accelerometer, gyro, proximity, and

compass. Key features of the phone include a fingerprint sensor capable of unlocking the phone in 0.5 seconds, a remote control app for TV, AC etc and smart voice wake up.

Emotion UI brings various add-ons and tweaks that are not available on stock android or other flavors of the OS.

Camera and storage

Primary (back) camera is a whopping 20 MP with an aperture size of f/2.0. It has a 1/2.4' sensor size and is equipped with features such as phase detection autofocus, geo-tagging, touch focus, HDR, panorama and face detection.

It includes a dual-tone dual-LED flash. The secondary (front) camera is 8 MP with an aperture size of f/2.4. Interestingly it is also equipped with an LED flash on the front. To ensure there is enough storage the phone comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions and memory can also be expanded via Micro-SD Card slot.

Battery & Connectivity

Honor 7 has a 3100mAh Li-Pro non-removable battery which provides a 350H standby time and 8H 20M of continuous Talktime on 3G. The phone is equipped with WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, dual- band, WiFi Direct, hotspot features. It also incorporates Bluetooth v4.1, A2DP, EDR and Low Energy. Other connectivity features include GPS with A-GPS, LONASS/ BDS, NFC, IR Port, Stereo FM, MicroUSB 2.0 and Single SIM GSM, LTE support.

Competition

The phone is priced at 22,000 and can be categorized as a mid-range phone. Popular alternatives in this range include the Oneplus 2 which is a Snapdragon 810 processor phone with 4GB RAM providing ‘near stock experience’, Asus Zenfone 2 with 4GB Ram and 1.8Ghz Intel chipset or the LG Nexus 5X with pure stock android but on a slightly higher side.
