Atletico Madrid striker fernando torres has been released from hospital, following a head injury in the 1-1 draw against Deportivo La Coruña on Thursday, according to Sky Sports.

The former Liverpool and Chelsea star was stretchered off and rushed into an ambulance after a clash of heads with Depor’s Alex Bergantinos with five minutes to go in the La Liga fixture.

The 32-year-old released a statement earlier stating that he was in a ‘stable’ condition, easing the worry on his team-mates and manager.

“Worried” and “Nervous” Simeone

Torres was only brought on in place of Kevin Gameiro in the 65th minute, the last of Atleti’s substitutions, before fear and horror came over manager Diego Simeone, becoming “worried” and “nervous” upon seeing his charge’s heavy fall.

“We heard the blow from the bench, we saw how he fell and we were afraid. We didn’t know if that noise was Fernando’s neck or not,” said the Argentine in his post-match press conference.

However, Atletico have released a statement, saying: “A cranial and cervical CT scan carried out on Fernando Torres has ruled out that the Rojiblanco striker has suffered any altercations or traumatic injuries.”

Deportivo doctor Carlos Lariño hailed Atleti’s Sime Vrsaljko and Gabi after the pair rushed to their team-mate's aid, telling El Partidazo: "They did what they did, Gabi got bitten while trying to get his tongue. The attention was very quick. What they did was perfect."

Torres fine after incident

It was the Spaniard’s 13th appearance from the bench, but his quick exit saw Atletico finish the match was 10 men and they held out for a draw.

An earlier error from Jan Oblak had gifted Deportivo with the lead, only for a superb Antoine Griezmann strike to equalise and see Atleti leave the Riazor with a point.

But the result was a footnote in the encounter, with Atletico defender Filipe Luis stating: “It’s very ugly to see it, we were all scared but at least the news we have received so far is good and the most important thing is that Fernando is well.”

Torres did release a statement in the early hours of the morning, claiming that he can’t wait to get back, with Deportivo sending their best wishes.
