2017 has been a great year for Film so far. Films such as ‘Logan’ and ‘Get Out’ have been hugely successful with both audiences and film critics lavishing praise on them. Box-office returns have been good too. For example, ‘The Fate of the Furious’ is days away from making $1 billion worldwide in less than 3 weeks after its release. The crazy thing about all of this is that the summer season has yet to start and there are a lot of blockbuster films that are highly anticipated to do very well on a commercial and/or critical level. These films include:
‘Wonder Woman’
Truly, DC films have not had the best of times recently.
‘Batman v. Superman’ and ‘Suicide Squad’ were not well received and they failed to successfully build upon the foundation laid by ‘Man of Steel’ which itself received mixed reviews. However, ‘Wonder Woman’, set for release in June, is seen by many to be the beginning of DC’s redemption.
The trailers have been great and the film has a talented director in Patty Jenkins. 'Wonder Woman' also has a cast that includes Chris Pine and Robin Wright who are brilliant actors. Because of this, there is a lot of hope that ‘Wonder Woman’ will be the first film in the DCEU that receives widespread critical acclaim.
‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’
It was a huge surprise when it was officially announced that Spider-Man would become a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and he was one of the best things about ‘Captain America: Civil War’.
Tom Holland is now playing the iconic superhero film and we will see him next in ‘Spider Man: Homecoming’ which will be released in July.
While previous Spider-Man films have been hit-and-miss, there is a lot of faith in this latest instalment to be a worthy entry in the MCU. If they can recapture what made Spider-Man one of if not the best element of ‘Civil War’, then we are in for a great film.
Either way, it will be a huge success at the box-office; every MCU film is!
‘Dunkirk’
‘Dunkirk’ will be directed by Christopher Nolan. That should be everything you need to know to get you excited about this film. Undoubtedly, Christopher Nolan is one of the best directors working in the film industry today. He was behind stunning films such as ‘Interstellar’, ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘Inception’ which are arguably amongst the best films released so far in the 21st century.
This film will be released in July and will focus on the Dunkirk evacuation, known as Operation Dynamo, during World War 2. Talented actors such as Cillian Murphy, Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance and Tom Hardy will bring this story to life and, with Nolan at the helm, expectations for this film are ridiculously high. It has the potential to be one of the best films of the year, let alone the summer.
Honourable Mentions
The films mentioned above are highly anticipated but there are many others including ‘Alien: Covenant’, ‘Baywatch’ and ‘War of the Planet of the Apes’. Hopefully, this summer will be a great one for film, even if it does come at the expense of our bank balance!
