Amazon to launch #The Lord Of The Rings #TV series after acquiring global rights to the franchise based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s fantasy novels. According to Deadline.com, the deal cost Amazon $250 million and covers multiple seasons with the possibility of a spin-off.

The Lord of the Rings series is a prequel to The Fellowship of the Rings and will be produced by Amazon studios in collaboration with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins, New Line Cinema, a division of Warner Bros. Entertainment which produced the movie franchise.

Amazon, Netflix and HBO had been contacted by the Tolkien Estate but Amazon clinched the deal by paying the $250 million for the rights.

Aside from the rights, Amazon may be churning out another $150 million for the production of the series each season.
