It's Official

The deal was made official by Amazon today and is the biggest investment by Amazon in a TV series. The Lord of the Rings is one of the most successful movie franchises. The TV adaptation of Tolkien’s novels looks like a potential success with the popularity of the movies.

Following the success of the game of thrones fantasy TV series, The Lord of the Rings may be a worthy competitor to the blockbuster show on HBO.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002) and The Return of the King (2003) was directed by Peter Jackson.

The story revolves around a Hobbit in Middle-earth destined to embark on a journey to destroy the ring with the help of his friends and some warriors.

Among the highest grossing film series

The Lord of the Rings is among the highest grossing film series of all time earning almost $3 billion at the box office. The films won 17 out of 30 Academy Award nominations.

The final film in the series, The Return of the King won all 11 nominations at the Academy Awards, receiving praise for its visual and special effects.

Fans of the franchise will be excited about the upcoming TV series and Amazon and its partners will be expecting equal or greater success with this project. The series will want to replicate the successes of the Game of Thrones series as Amazon prepares to invest heavily in the series.

The fantasy series will still be set in Middle-earth but expect some changes to the plot and the introduction of new characters. This is one of the most anticipated series after Game of Thrones because of the tremendous achievements of Tolkien's trilogy.
